The win of the Aussie raider Dane Julia at Te Aroha yesterday proved a good result for the bookies despite late support for the South African Gr I winner.
Though the punters climbed late onto Dane Julia, trained by Lee Freedman (pictured), the damage had been done with the bookies coming up smiling as she raced to a decisive win over the favourite Shanzero in the Gr I NZ Bloodstock Breeders Stakes. However, for the punters Riccarton Park winner Scarlet Vanhara provided plenty of cash after opening up at $6 last Thursday. Other good results for the punters included Low Risk and Nautique, while for the bookies Double Barrel, Attackum and Casabella Lane were all good results at Te Aroha. Saturday saw the inaugural running of the Jockey Challenge which proved to be a popular betting medium, with Matamata rider Cameron Lammas taking the honours in a close finish after opening at $18 and drifting at one stage to $31. Winners: Scarlet Vanhara $5000 @ $5 to return $25,000, Craigieburn $1000 @ $13 to return $13,000, I'm Isaac $1000 @ $7.50 to return $7500. Losers: Shanzero $20,000 @ $2.80. |
