"He should get in now that he's won." Agamemnon had been off the winners' list since taking the Listed Wealleans Matamata Cup at Matamata last October and that victory completed a hat trick of wins, the first two victories coming at Te Rapa. He has had seven starts since the winning streak without repeating those performances until today, though he has shown gradual improvement in his current campaign. He hinted he was back on the right track when second to Zoomin over 1600 metres at Te Rapa on July 25. "He had been missing the jump and that had been the only reason he hadn't been doing better," said Gillespie, who trains Agamemnon for breeders David and Richard Moore. "There was nothing else wrong with him." Agamemnon was ridden for the first time today by Mark Du Plessis and had to dig deep over the final stages to hold out Le Baron by a half head with three-quarters of a length to Caratacus. Le Baron looked likely to grab Agamemnon in the shadows of the winning post and though he just failed he pleased his connections with his effort. "The ground needed to be a bit better for him," said co-trainer Donna Logan. "He just couldn't sprint the last bit like he can on top of the ground." Logan disclosed a possible trip to Sydney for Le Baron. "We've got to work a few things out yet, but on this run he might as well go to Sydney," said Logan.

Agamemnon will be asked to back up next weekend after a hard fought win in the Seaton Park 1600 at Te Rapa today.
