Horse racing has been part and parcel of the Kiwi way of life for more than 160 years; even before Figaro became the first thoroughbred to land on our shores in 1840, slipping into Wellington at a time when the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi was still fresh on the minds of New Zealand's inhabitants.

Since those early days there have been many great stories of New Zealand thoroughbred horse racing, stories which have been recalled down through the years. These stories have helped maintain the high profile of horse racing in this country, ensuring its survival through the hard times by providing happiness and hope to all walks of life involved with the equine athlete.

Times have changed since New Zealand was known as the country of Rugby, Racing and Beer, but NZ Racing News is determined to provide the stories and information to help our fierce passion for horse racing stay alive in this fast-moving world.

About Wally O'Hearn - Editor

When horse racing gets into your blood, it's there to stay. That's the case for many people and it certainly applies to Wally O'Hearn (pictured), founder and Editor of NZ Racing News.

ImageWally has been passionate about New Zealand thoroughbred horse racing since his childhood, the passion being handed down by generations of his family.

This passion led him into racing journalism on leaving school, initially working for the Sunday News and Best Bets and later spending seven years in the racing department of the NZ Herald before being chief racing writer for the Auckland Sun.

Wally later took up the same position with the Friday Flash, New Zealand's only nationwide racing publication, and remained in that role for 18 years. During his time with the Friday Flash he covered all the major race meetings in New Zealand.

He has also reported from several Australian features, including Melbourne Cups and Sydney Easter Carnivals and 10 runnings of the Adelaide Cup.

On the international stage he has covered the world's richest thoroughbred race meeting, the Dubai World Cup, as well as the Hong Kong International meeting and major horse racing events in Singapore and South Africa. He has been actively involved as a contributor for a multitude of national and international publications.

Wally’s love and involvement with horse racing goes beyond reporting. He has first-hand experience of the highs and lows of the NZ horse racing industry, as a breeder and owner in his own right. He has enjoyed success with such horses as Don’t Worry, Reckless Kelly, Vagabond Heart, Uhuru, Of The Essence and Kuniya (in Australia).

Wally saw the need to fill the void made by the April 2006 closure of the Friday Flash, and as a result, he put his experience and knowledge into developing the NZ Racing News website.

Wally's aim is to bring you and the industry the latest New Zealand horse racing news, free horse racing tips, and thoroughbred racing results every day.
